Xtratime Web Desk : Roberto Martinez has officially stepped down as Portugal's head coach following the team's defeat to Spain, bringing an end to his tenure with the national side.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup has already seen several coaching changes, with some managers resigning and others being relieved of their duties after disappointing campaigns. Martinez has now joined that list, although his departure also coincides with the expiration of his contract.
Speaking emotionally after the match, Martinez confirmed that it was his final game in charge of Portugal.
"This was my last match as Portugal's head coach. I accepted this job with the ambition of winning the World Cup. Since we could not achieve that objective, I believe it is the right time for someone else to take over," he said.
The Spanish coach added that his contract had come to an end and that the Portuguese Football Federation now has the opportunity to appoint a new manager ahead of the next cycle.
Martinez also defended captain Cristiano Ronaldo during his post-match press conference. Ronaldo started every match for Portugal during the World Cup, a decision that drew criticism from sections of the media and fans, especially after substitute Gonçalo Ramos impressed with his performances but was largely restricted to the bench.
Backing his captain, Martinez praised Ronaldo's overall contribution to the team.
"Cristiano was fully prepared to play 90 minutes. His value goes beyond scoring goals. He creates space for his teammates, provides assists, and remains an important player for this team. He is a role model for the younger generation and gave everything to help Portugal succeed at this World Cup. I am grateful for everything he has done," Martinez said.
According to reports in the Portuguese media, experienced coach Jorge Jesus is the leading candidate to replace Martinez. Jesus previously coached Cristiano Ronaldo at Al Nassr, raising the possibility of the pair reuniting with the Portugal national team.
