East Bengal have completed the signing of Australian international Christopher James Ikonomidis on a two-year contract, adding an experienced attacking option to their squad. The 31-year-old, better known as Chris Ikonomidis, is primarily an attacking midfielder but is equally comfortable playing on either wing or as a striker. A right-footed player, he is known for his creativity, versatility, and attacking instincts.
Ikonomidis was last seen in action for Macarthur Bulls FC in the A-League. After being released by the club, he became a free agent before sealing his move to the Kolkata giants.
One of the most remarkable aspects of his career came in 2015, when he made his senior debut for the Australian national team even before making a senior club appearance. It was a rare achievement that highlighted his immense potential from a young age.
His career suffered a major setback in 2020 after sustaining a serious ACL injury, which kept him out for a lengthy period. However, Ikonomidis showed tremendous resilience, worked his way back to full fitness, and successfully re-established himself in the A-League with impressive performances.
Interestingly, Ikonomidis is a former teammate of Mohun Bagan striker Jamie Maclaren. The two represented Australia together during the 2019 AFC Asian Cup and in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Now, with Ikonomidis joining East Bengal and Maclaren leading the line for Mohun Bagan, Indian football fans are set to witness an exciting new chapter as two former Australian teammates become fierce rivals in the Kolkata derby.
