Joseph Vijay has offered a Rs 30 lakh cash incentive for weightlifter Raja Muthupandi, who won a silver medal in the men's 65kg category at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Glasgow, Scotland. The Chief Minister congratulated the athlete on his success, saying the prize was in appreciation of his remarkable performance and expressed optimism that the medal-winning feat would encourage future athletes throughout the state. The Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, held in Glasgow, attracted over 3,000 participants from 74 countries.
India has fielded a 123-member team in a variety of events and has continued to build to its medal total with outstanding performances.
Raja Muthupandi, a native of Thoothukudi district in Tamil Nadu, represented India in the men's 65kg weightlifting event and competed with amazing commitment throughout.
In the snatch event, he failed to lift 126kg on his first try but rebounded well to clear the same weight on his second. His last attempt at 129kg was unsuccessful, leaving him with a best lift of 126kg in the discipline.
Muthupandi displayed tenacity in the clean and jerk phase after failing his first effort at 158kg.
Regrouping swiftly, he lifted 160kg on his second effort, bringing his total to 286 kg.The feat earned him a silver medal and put him among the best performers in his weight class.
Chief Minister Vijay congratulated the young weightlifter on his feat, calling it a great moment for Tamil Nadu and India, in a statement on social media. He highlighted Muthupandi's achievement as a record-breaking feat and applauded his dedication on the world arena. The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu announced a cash prize of ₹30 lakh to commemorate the athlete's performance. This is one of the largest sports incentives in the state.
He hoped that Muthupandi's victory would inspire prospective sportsmen to strive for greatness in sports and bring more prominence to Tamil Nadu.
