Indian Football Team awaits clearance from sports ministry for Asian Games participation

Xtra Time Web Desk: The upcoming Asian Games, starting from September 23, will be an exciting opportunity for the Indian men’s football team to showcase their talents in Hangzhou, China. Football enthusiasts in the country have been eagerly anticipating the chance for the team to represent India as the best team in the Asian Games. However, there has been a concern regarding the clearance from the Central Sports Minister.

According to the rules set by the Indian Sports Ministry, the team must be among the top eight in Asia to be eligible to participate in the Asian Games. Presently, India holds the 18th position in the rankings of the Asian Football Confederation. Nevertheless, their recent triumph in the SAFF Championship has propelled them to the 99th spot in the FIFA rankings.

In light of this situation, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has sought special permission from the Central Sports Minister. The Federation is optimistic about getting the required clearance, having had positive discussions with the Ministry.

Though the Asian Games regulations allow the participation of U-23 national teams, three players above the age of 23 can be included in the squad. As per reports, India’s national team captain Sunil Chhetri, goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, and defender Sandesh Jhingan will be part of the squad for the Asian Games.

AIFF has already sent a potential list of 50 players to all the football clubs in the country, not just for the Asian Games but also for the upcoming AFC U-23 Asian Championship qualifiers and the Kings Cup.
