Dilip Gavit Is Chasing More Than a Finish Line: A 100m Champion With Two More Races to Run

Dilip Mahadu Gavit was just five when an accident left him with a serious injury to his right arm. The injury eventually led to an amputation. It could have become the story of how a childhood dream ended. Instead, it became the beginning of a different journey.

Gavit found his way into athletics and slowly turned running into his strength. Years later, the boy who had lost an arm was standing on international podiums with the Indian flag around him. His journey has now taken him to another big challenge, the Asian Para Games, where he is dreaming bigger than before.

At the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Gavit won gold in the men's 100m T47 event, setting a Games record with a timing of 10.71 seconds. But he is not stopping there. At the Asian Para Games, he will compete in both the 100m and 400m events.

The 400m is particularly significant for Gavit. He had won gold in the event at the 2023 Asian Para Games, with that medal becoming India's landmark 100th medal at the competition. Now, he wants to return with an even bigger target, two gold medals.

For Dilip Mahadu Gavit, these races are about more than timings, medals or personal records. Every time he steps onto the track, there is another goal waiting at the finish line: seeing the Indian flag rise. His words capture that ambition simply.
