IFL 2026-27: Indian Football’s New Season to Begin October 30 With Expanded Reach

Xtra Time Newsdesk: The Indian Football League (IFL) 2026-27 season is set to begin on October 30, with the All India Football Federation (AIFF) confirming the new start date following a meeting of the league’s Governing Council in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Representatives from all 11 participating clubs attended the meeting, where the focus was on preparations for the upcoming campaign as well as a review of last season. The previous edition may have been a shortened one, but it managed to generate significantly greater interest, with the league recording four times the viewership compared to the 2024-25 season.

One of the major changes for the new season will be the limit on foreign players. Under the approved regulation, teams can have a maximum of three foreign players on the pitch at any given time. The move is expected to create more opportunities for Indian players during matches.

The league will also expand its geographical reach in 2026-27, with Nagaland and Odisha added as new venues. Their inclusion will take the competition to more parts of the country and give supporters in these regions an opportunity to watch IFL action closer to home.

The upcoming season is also expected to return to a full home-and-away format, following the truncated previous campaign. Discussions around the IFL Charter, proposed budget and sponsorship plans were also held during the meeting.

Broadcasting preparations are already underway. IFL club representatives and AIFF Deputy Secretary General M Satyanarayan met Prasar Bharati CEO Gaurav Dwivedi on Monday to discuss the broadcast partnership for the new season.

With the new season scheduled to start on October 30, the IFL is now preparing for a campaign that promises a wider footprint, increased exposure and a more complete league format.
