XtraTime Newsdesk: There have been many legendary sixes in cricket history. Some become so legendary that they end up being part of cricket folklore. A story of one such six was narrated by none other than the legendary batter Sir Viv Richards himself on the YouTube channel The Stump Campion.
This story's origin lies in the friendship between two legends, Sir Viv and legendary all rounder, Sir Ian Botham. The entire cricket world knows how close Sir Viv and Ian Botham were. Viv recently shared a funny about what happened when he batted while being hung over from a boys night out with Botham.
Viv Richards said, “Everyone knows Ian Botham is a very good friend of mine. One night we were drinking and I was sick. I thought I wouldn’t be able to bat the next day. I went to the field but I went to the physio’s table. I thought we should win the toss and the captain should bat. That’s what happened.
The two openers went to bat. But one of them got out quickly. Then one of them came and said to me, ‘You have to go now, Viv.’ I was lying on the table. I somehow got up and carried my bat and went to the crease. The bowler Thomas came running. If the ball had been straight, I would have played it, but he bowled it outside the off-stump. I really couldn’t see anything. Maybe he thought he would bowl it straight because I couldn’t see it. But suddenly he turned around and said, ‘What’s the matter with you? What colour is it? Red, round, weighs about five ounces. If you’re going to be my opponent, you need to wake up. That was the wake-up call.
The next ball was straight. I closed my eyes. I went to the line of the ball, then I heard a sweet sound. The ball flew like a plane. Out of the field.
Everyone knows that there is a river behind the Taunton field. There were two men fishing in a canoe. The ball fell into their canoe. They got very angry. When I went to get the ball, they started abusing it severely. “
That's how legendary Sir Viv Richards was . He became "blind" due to his illness, but had no problem hitting sixes. That's how good he was at batting.
