Rohit Sharma’s fans may have reason to rejoice, as the former Mumbai Indians captain could return to the helm of the franchise. Following a disappointing period under Hardik Pandya’s leadership, Mumbai Indians are reportedly considering handing the reins back to their most successful captain.
Under Rohit’s captaincy, Mumbai Indians won the IPL title in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. With five IPL trophies to his name, Rohit established himself as one of the most successful captains in the tournament’s history. However, in 2024, when Hardik Pandya returned to Mumbai Indians from Gujarat Titans, the franchise handed him the captaincy.
The decision sparked considerable controversy. Questions were raised over how a captain with such an impressive track record could be removed from the role. Mumbai Indians endured a disastrous 2024 campaign, finishing at the bottom of the points table. Although the franchise returned to the playoffs in 2025, they have not won the IPL title since 2020.
Now, with a possible change in leadership on the cards, Rohit’s name has emerged as the frontrunner. Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma were also reportedly in contention for the role. However, considering Rohit’s vast experience and outstanding record as captain, the Mumbai Indians management appears to be leaning towards reinstating him as skipper.
Meanwhile, another important question has emerged: what lies ahead for Hardik Pandya?
The all-rounder could potentially move to another franchise if Mumbai Indians decide to make a change in leadership. Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals are among the teams being discussed as possible destinations for Hardik.
If Rohit returns as captain, it could mark a significant turning point for Mumbai Indians as they look to reclaim their position among the IPL’s dominant franchises. However, the future of both Rohit and Hardik remains a major talking point ahead of the next season.
