Josh Hazlewood took six wickets as Australia completed a 214-run win over South Africa on the fifth day of the first Test at Kingsmead on Tuesday.
Hazlewood twice broke promising stands and finished with six for 49.
The host side — set 421 runs to win — was bowled out for 206, in the first Test series between the teams in South Africa since the 2018 sandpaper scandal.
Opening batsman Aiden Markram defied the bowlers for a minute short of six hours, scoring 75 before he was ninth out, caught behind from an inside edge off Mitchell Starc. The last four wickets fell by five runs in 16 deliveries against the second new ball.
Markram and Vian Mulder, 29, were relatively calm at bat for the first 110 minutes of the day. But a double bowling change brought two wickets.
Mulder was caught out wide by wicketkeeper Alex Carey for 29 minutes against Hazlewood after 139 minutes of 110 balls. Man of the match Matt Renshaw came to bowl the off-spinner in the next over and dismissed Kyle Verane for a single on the first ball, forcing the South African wicketkeeper to play a wide ball which Steve Smith caught at slip.
It was a dream run for Renshaw, who top-scored both innings with scores of 190 and 82 and claimed his maiden Test wicket on Monday when he dismissed South African captain Themba Bavuma. This was Smith's fifth catch of the match, making him the world record holder for most catches by a defender in Tests.
Smith returned to the game after leaving the field at the start of the innings against South Africa on Monday with a contusion to the head while batting. Marco Jansen scored 35 points and Markram added 45 before Hazlewood removed him with a second new pitch in the fourth. Three pitches later, Simon Harmer sent Carey a sharp ball.
Australia was in trouble at 124 for six on the first day but dominated the rest of the match after Renshaw steered it to a first innings total of 390.
