Premier League: Klopp and Liverpool’s success did not come overnight

XtraTime Web Desk: Liverpool was crowned the champions of Premier League for the first time after Chelsea registered a 2-1 win over Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night. The club from Anfield came tantalizingly close to winning the league last season when they ended up just one point behind City. Jurgen Klopp’s side has been the most consistent team this season, losing (0-3) just once in the league to Watford in February. To end up winning the Premier League with seven games to spare and a gap of 23 points over second placed City is an unbelievable achievement for Jurgen Klopp and his team.

In the last 12 months Liverpool has won the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and World Club Cup, such has been the dominance of the club from Anfield. But Liverpool’s success did not come overnight.
The resurgence started way back in 2015 when Brendan Rodgers made way for Jurgen Klopp, after the Reds ended up 10th in Premier League table. Four days later, Jurgen Klopp was appointed Liverpool’s new manager, signing a three-year contract.

The first sign of Liverpool’s resurgence was witnessed when Liverpool made it to the finals of League Cup and Europa League in 2015-16. That signaled Klopp was in the right direction. Winning the Champions League last season was a confirmation that this Liverpool side can compete with the very best. The club from Anfield was smart enough in the transfer market picking the best players on offer.

An imposing Alisson Becker has been assisted by a defensive genius in Virgil van Dijk and this partnership led to Liverpool conceding just 21 goals in 31 games. Their attacking trio of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino has netted 17, 15 and 8 goals, respectively this season so far.

The Liverpool boss had a simple yet emphatic message for his fans after Liverpool clinched the Premier League title on Thursday night. “This is for you”.
