Xtra Time Web Desk:  Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been seen using an unusual device during the ongoing Test match in Chennai—a black strap wrapped around his neck, which he bites down on while batting. This innovative mechanism is part of Shakib’s effort to maintain proper head positioning, a vital adjustment he has had to make due to an eye condition that emerged last year.

Shakib's mentor Mohammad Salahuddin and Bangladesh Cricket Board's chief physician Dr. Debashish Chowdhury revealed that Shakib devised this strap himself after previously trying a neck brace. His condition, Central Serous Chorioretinopathy (CSC), causes fluid buildup under the retina, distorting his vision. Ophthalmologists across Chennai, London, Dhaka, and Singapore diagnosed the issue, leading Shakib to focus on improving his head positioning for optimal sighting of the ball. However, his head often fell over, affecting his technique.

Dr. Chowdhury confirmed that the strap is Shakib's own innovation. "He came up with this idea. It helps hold his head steady," he said, adding that Shakib has tested the strap in the nets and during shadow batting practice. Bangladesh batting coach David Hemp has also seen Shakib working with the strap for months, noting the player’s comfort with it.

Salahuddin, who often advises Shakib on his game, was pleased to see the cricketer trying this new method. "He ties it around his neck, and biting it keeps his head steady, preventing unnecessary movement of his eyes while batting," Salahuddin explained.

Shakib's condition sidelined him from several matches earlier this year, including the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) and white-ball games against Sri Lanka. However, he made a successful return to international cricket in the second Test against Sri Lanka and played a key role in Bangladesh’s recent Test series win against Pakistan.

Despite his efforts, Shakib struggled with the bat and ball in Chennai, with a potential finger issue adding to concerns. Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto defended Shakib’s place in the team, emphasizing the veteran's commitment. Meanwhile, selectors are monitoring his fitness ahead of the upcoming Kanpur Test, with the possibility of Shakib playing as a batter if the finger injury persists.
