Xtra Time Web Desk: Lionel Messi's decision to join MLS side Inter Miami in July 2023 took the football world by surprise, especially considering the Argentine star's continued dominance after leading his nation to World Cup glory in 2022. Joining on a two-and-a-half-year contract, Messi has been instrumental in Inter Miami's success under Tata Martino. With just four matches left, Miami sits atop the standings, and Messi's contributions of 14 goals and 14 assists have been pivotal in securing a nine-point lead over FC Cincinnati.

However, Messi's future beyond his Miami tenure is already sparking speculation. According to reports from El Nacional, Messi intends to return to his boyhood club, Newell's Old Boys, once his contract in the MLS expires. The 36-year-old has previously expressed a strong desire to finish his career at the Argentine club, stating in 2016, "If I go back to Argentina tomorrow, the club I would play for would be Newell's."

Despite this long-held dream, Messi has expressed concerns about Argentina's security, emphasizing the need for a safe environment for his family. "I want my children to grow up in a calm place, enjoying life with security," he remarked during an interview with TyC Sports.

Messi recently returned to action following an ankle injury suffered in the Copa America final in July. He made an immediate impact by scoring twice in Inter Miami's 3-1 win over Philadelphia Union. With Miami also eyeing the Supporter's Shield, Messi remains central to their ambitions, even as his future plans may take him back to where it all began at Newell's.
