IPL 2024: Steve Smith urges fans to let go of past and back Hardik Pandya

Xtra Time Web Desk: There’s been a significant shake-up in the Mumbai Indians (MI) camp with Hardik Pandya taking over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma. The decision has faced backlash from fans and social media, resulting in a tough start for Hardik and the team. Steve Smith’s words urging fans to support Hardik and for senior players to step in and assist him carry weight given his experience in cricket leadership roles and as a seasoned player himself.

Smith’s call for fans to let go of past grievances and support the current captain reflects a sentiment of unity and backing for the team’s decisions. It’s crucial for the team’s success that players receive support from all fronts, especially during challenging times.

He said, “’Yes and no. Obviously, there was that (booing) going on in the first two games. It sort of becomes a bit of a thing, if that makes sense. But, it was unfortunate, I think. I’d love to see them supporting Hardik. Obviously, there’s a lot of huge Rohit fans out there.”

Hardik’s transition from Gujarat Titans (GT) to Mumbai Indians (MI) and assuming the captaincy adds an extra layer of pressure. However, with the support of senior players and the understanding of fans, he can potentially overcome these challenges and lead the team effectively. Smith’s acknowledgment of Hardik’s talent and success with GT underlines the potential for success with the right support structure in place.

As the season progresses, it will be interesting to see how Hardik adapts to his new role and whether MI can turn their fortunes around with him at the helm.

”A lot of people are a bit annoyed that he’s not the captain of the side. But, everyone needs to let go of that and support Hardik. He’s a wonderful player. He had a lot of success at Gujarat (Titans). He’s back (as) captain of the side at Mumbai now.

”The senior players need to help him out,” said Smith.

Smith, however, feels that the outside noise hasn’t been a factor in MI’s poor start, but insisted they would need to turn things around quickly.

“One thing about the Mumbai Indians is (that) they’re notoriously bad starters in the tournament. They’ve done it on numerous occasions,” he said.

“I don’t think they’d be too worried just yet. But, they will have to turn things around really quickly. It doesn’t look good, 0-3 at the bottom of the table. They have to turn things around really quickly,” he added.

MI will be next in action against DC at the Wankhede stadium on April 7.
