World Weightlifting Championships 2022: Mirabai Chanu lifts combined weight of 200 kgs to win silver

Xtra Time Web Desk: India’s ace weight-lifter Mirabai Chanu settled for silver in the World Weightlifting Championships in Bagota, Columbia on Wednesday. The Tokyo Olympics silver medal winner lifted a combined weight of 200 kilos (snatch and clean & jerk). She lifted 87 kg in snatch category and 113 kg in clean & jerk category.

Jiang Huihua (206 kg) and Hou Zhihui (198 kg) of China, bagged gold and bronze medal respectively.

Chanu has been carrying a wrist injury and it was evident as she tried to lift in her second attempt at clean and jerk category. She had hurt her wrist during a training session in September. She participated in the National Games with the injury in October.

Chanu has a personal best of 207kg (88kg+119kg). She achieved the 119 kg lift in clean & jerk at the Asian Championships in April 2021. However her 88 kg best in the snatch event is still 8 kgs below the snatch world record of 96 kg achieved by China’s Hou Zhihui .

The 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medal winner has been trying to breach the 90kg mark in the snatch category since 2020. But an injury in back coupled with a wrist injury has been causing a concern.

The World Championships are the first qualification event for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
