World Rapid Chess Championship: Surya Sekhar disappoints after a great first day

GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly lost all his three matches at World Rapid Chess Championship on Tuesday.

Internet Desk: Surya Sekhar Ganguly could not live up to the expectation as he lost all his three matches on the second day of the World Rapid Chess Championship at Doha. Shakhriyar Mamedyarov of Azerbaijan moved into the soal lead after the tenth round.The former World Junior Champion,won a fine technical game in the tenth round against Anton Korobov of Ukraine to take his score to seven and half points.

Dark horse Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine,known for his eccentric ideas,overcame resistance from Pantsulaia of Georgia to move to second position with seven points.Ivanchuk had shocked World Champion Carlsen earlier in the eighth round.
Despite the loss,Carlsen clawed back to third position,which he shares with Vishwanathan Anand with back to back wins againstRussian Grandmasters Yakovenko and Grischuk.
Surya Shekhar Ganguky could not maintain the tempo of the first day as he lost his three matches today.

The Indian grandmaster got off to a dream start in the tournament yesterday, as he played a draw with current World Champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway with Black pieces in the opening round. He followed this result with another exciting draw against Ian Nepomniaschhi of Russia.

Magnus started the game with unusual moves to confuse Surya who kept his calm and took the advantage of inaccurate play of his opponent.With time pressuremounting,Surya missed an elementary mate in 3 moves to let his opponent draw with a perpetual check.

The last five rounds will  be played tomorrow to decide the winner of the World Rapid Chess  Championship2017
