Julian Nagelsmann resigns as the head coach of the German National Team after dismal World Cup performance
This could open up a path for former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp to step in and take the reigns.

XtraTime Newsdesk: Julian Nagelsmann has resigned as the head coach of the German National Team after their dismal exit from the 2026 World Cup. Nagelsmann, whose contract lasted till 2028, accepted DFB's suggestion to resign from his post according to Bild and Sky Germany. This could open up a path for former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp to step in and take the reigns.
Klopp, who left the Merseyside club in 2024, is currently Red Bull's Global Head of Football. Yet, his contract does have a release clause in case the DFB calls him for the job.
According to German media, Nagelsmann took part in a three hour meeting with DFB officials at the headquarters in Frankfurt. He was apparently offered a 7 million Euro severance package as compensation to leave the position.
If his departure is confirmed, the 38 year old becomes the second German coach sacked after his predecessor, current FC Barcelona manager Hansi Flick, too was given the door after a group stage exit in the 2022 World Cup.
Germany crashed out in a penalty shootout against Paraguay in Boston on Monday after the match ended 1-1 following extra time. It was the first time Germany had lost a penalty shootout at a World Cup.
The four-time World Cup champion suffered group-stage exits at Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022. Germany has not won a knockout match or kept a clean sheet at the tournament since the 2014 final, when it beat Argentina 1-0 in Brazil.
