Spain delivered another commanding performance as La Roja booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 with a convincing 3-0 victory over Austria in the knockout stage. Mikel Oyarzabal starred with a brilliant brace, while Pedro Porro added another goal in the second half as Spain completely outclassed their opponents.
The Spanish side controlled possession throughout the match, showcased their trademark attacking football and slick passing, and barely allowed Austria a chance to threaten. Remarkably, Spain are yet to concede a single goal in the tournament. Goalkeeper Unai Simón had a quiet evening, with Austria failing to register even one shot on target.
Spain will now face the winner of the Round of 16 clash between Portugal and Croatia.
Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal once again demonstrated why he is regarded as one of the brightest young talents in world football. The Barcelona winger remained on the pitch until the 85th minute and came close to scoring late in the game, only for David Alaba to clear his powerful effort off the goal line.
Mikel Oyarzabal took charge of the scoring duties. He opened the scoring in the 36th minute after meeting a perfectly weighted pass from Marc Cucurella. Oyarzabal then sealed both his brace and Spain's third goal in the 89th minute, once again finishing from another excellent delivery by Cucurella.
Pedro Porro doubled Spain's lead in the second half, converting a pass from Baena to put the result beyond doubt.
Despite the heavy defeat, Austria goalkeeper Alexander Schlager produced an impressive display, making six crucial saves to prevent the scoreline from becoming even more one-sided.
Spain began the match cautiously, but after the first-half drinks break they increased the tempo and took complete control. Once Oyarzabal broke the deadlock in the 36th minute, Austria never looked capable of mounting a comeback.
The victory also extended Spain's remarkable unbeaten run in competitive matches to 35 games since March 2023. With four clean sheets from four World Cup matches, La Roja continue their pursuit of another world title in emphatic fashion.
