Japan etched their name into the history books by becoming the first Asian nation to score four goals in a single FIFA World Cup match, thrashing Tunisia 4-0 in a dominant Group F encounter at the 2026 World Cup.
A brilliant brace from striker Ayase Ueda inspired the Blue Samurai to their first victory of the tournament and confirmed Tunisia's elimination from the competition.
Japan started the match on the front foot and quickly established control with their aggressive attacking approach. Midfielder Daichi Kamada opened the scoring in the first half, giving his side a deserved lead. In the 31st minute, Ueda doubled Japan's advantage with a stunning strike from outside the penalty area, leaving the Tunisian goalkeeper with no chance.
The Asian giants continued their dominance after the break. Junya Ito added a third goal after latching onto a perfectly weighted chipped pass from Ueda and calmly finishing. Ueda then capped off a memorable performance by scoring his second goal of the night with a looping header, completing Japan's historic four-goal haul.
The victory takes Japan to four points in Group F, level with the Netherlands on both points and goal difference. With their head-to-head encounter ending in a draw, goal difference could play a crucial role in determining the final group standings.
Tunisia's defense struggled throughout the match, appearing disorganized and vulnerable under constant pressure. New head coach Hervé Renard opted to replace goalkeeper Mouhib Chamakh with Aymen Dahmen, but the change failed to prevent a heavy defeat.
Although Tunisia showed brief signs of fighting their way back into the contest, Japan's disciplined structure, relentless pressing, and rapid transitions proved too much to handle. The Blue Samurai controlled the game from start to finish, underlining their growing stature on the world stage.
With this historic performance, Japan have once again showcased the strength of Asian football, sending a strong message to the rest of the tournament and cementing their place among the World Cup's standout teams.
