xtratime web desk: The extraordinary story of a young football fan from Kerala has touched hearts across the state, highlighting the power of passion, hope, and the beautiful game.
For the family of 26-year-old Akshay from Kakkanad, Brazil’s qualification for the FIFA World Cup is much more than a sporting achievement. It has become a symbol of hope in their long and difficult battle to bring their beloved son back to normal life.
A devoted supporter of Brazil, Akshay suffered a stroke shortly after Brazil’s elimination from the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Since then, he has remained bedridden and largely unresponsive, with little sign of awareness for nearly four years.
However, his family witnessed what they describe as an emotional breakthrough after friends informed him that Brazil had secured qualification for the upcoming World Cup.
According to family members, Akshay opened his eyes and smiled—a reaction they had not seen in years.
“He was smiling,” a family member said emotionally, recalling the moment.
Kerala has always been known for its passionate football culture and strong support for Brazil. But for Akshay’s family and close friends, cheering for the Seleção this World Cup carries a deeply personal significance.
They now hold onto a single hope—that Brazil’s success on the world stage might inspire a miracle and help Akshay continue his fight toward recovery.
Last Saturday, some of Akshay’s friends visited him and shared the news of Brazil’s qualification. The response left everyone stunned and emotional.
The same day, Brazil played Haiti in their second group-stage match, and a local club near Akshay’s home organized a large-screen screening of the game.
Akshay’s father, K.T. Purushothaman, a daily-wage worker, said it was his son’s first trip outside the house in four years, apart from hospital visits.
“Other than going to the hospital, this was the first time Akshay stepped out of the house in the last four years,” he said.
Determined to make his son comfortable, Purushothaman is now arranging a television at home so Akshay can watch Brazil’s matches.
Before his illness, Akshay dreamed of becoming a footballer himself. His love for Brazil and the sport was immense. The family never imagined that their lives would change so dramatically.
Purushothaman still vividly remembers the night everything changed.
“More than two hours had passed after Brazil’s defeat, but Akshay had not returned home. When I went looking for him, I found him unconscious at the public screening venue where he had been watching the match,” he recalled.
That night marked the beginning of a difficult journey for the family. Yet despite years of hardship, their faith remains unshaken.
Family members, friends, and neighbours believe that Akshay’s deep love for football and his unwavering passion for Brazil could become a source of strength in his recovery.
As Brazil continues its World Cup campaign, the family’s prayer is simple: that every victory brings renewed hope to Akshay’s life and that one day he will walk again, returning to the football field he loves so dearly.
