Germany Survive Ivory Coast Scare to Reach World Cup Knockout Stage

Germany booked their place in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage, but only after a dramatic 2-1 victory over a spirited Ivory Coast side that pushed the four-time champions to the brink of defeat.

Julian Nagelsmann's men struggled for large parts of the contest as Ivory Coast produced an energetic and attacking display. However, substitute Deniz Undav emerged as Germany's savior, scoring twice in the second half, including a stoppage-time winner, to seal a crucial comeback victory.

Ivory Coast took a deserved lead in the 30th minute through captain Franck Kessié. The African side capitalized on their momentum immediately after the hydration break, catching the German defense off guard. Germany thought they had equalized through Kai Havertz, but the goal was ruled out for a foul.

The introduction of Undav in the second half changed the complexion of the game. The forward restored parity midway through the half with a stunning volley, giving Germany renewed hope. Encouraged by the equalizer, the Germans intensified their attacking efforts in search of a winner.

As the match appeared headed for a draw, Undav struck again in the fourth minute of stoppage time. Breaking through the Ivory Coast defense, he calmly found the back of the net to complete Germany's comeback and secure a 2-1 victory.

Despite the win, Germany looked far from convincing throughout the match. Ivory Coast arguably played the better football and created several opportunities to alter the outcome, especially in the closing stages. Their inability to convert key chances ultimately proved costly.

Undav's brace ensured Germany escaped with all three points and avoided another major World Cup setback. The victory is particularly significant for the Germans, who had suffered group-stage eliminations in the previous two World Cups. Since winning the trophy in 2014, this marks their first qualification for the knockout rounds.

After two matches, Germany sit at the top of Group E with six points and have already secured their place in the Round of 32. Ivory Coast remain in contention with three points from two games. The other teams in the group are Ecuador and Curaçao.
