Xtra Time Web Desk: Sri Lankan white-ball captain Dasun Shanaka is reportedly set to step down from his leadership role ahead of the highly anticipated World Cup 2023. This decision follows Sri Lanka's dismal performance in the final of the Asia Cup 2023, where they faced a humiliating defeat against Rohit Sharma's Indian team.

In the final match held in Colombo on September 17, Shanaka's team was bowled out for a mere 50 runs. In response, India chased down the target with ease, winning by 10 wickets in just 6.1 overs. This embarrassing loss appears to have prompted Shanaka to reconsider his captaincy.

Reports suggest that an official announcement from Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) regarding Shanaka's resignation as captain is imminent. Wicketkeeper-batsman Kusal Mendis is said to be the leading candidate to take over the helm of the national cricket team.

Shanaka, 32, has been struggling with his form in international cricket, scoring only 54 runs in six innings during the Asia Cup 2023, averaging just 10.80 with a strike rate of 65.85. Since 2022, he has managed only 489 runs in 33 matches, averaging 19.56.

It's worth noting that Shanaka played a crucial role in rejuvenating the Sri Lankan cricket team after the retirement of several veteran players. Under his leadership, Sri Lanka achieved significant success, including winning last year's Asia Cup in the UAE and securing 13 consecutive ODI victories, including the 2023 World Cup qualifiers.
