Wayne Rooney brutally injured in MLS debut for DC united !

XtraTime Web Desk: Wayne Rooney  scored his first MLS goal to help DC United beat the Colorado Rapids 2-1 on Saturday night.

United, who won for just the second time since May 19, secured victory with an own goal in the 90th minute when Ulises Segura’s cross deflected off Colorado’s Niki Jackson into the net.

Rooney opened the scoring in the 33rd minute after running onto a pass from Luciano Acosta and slipped it between the legs of goalkeeper Tim Howard.

Howard and Rooney were former team-mates when they played at Manchester United together between 2004 and 2007.

After the elation of his first goal in the USA, Rooney’s night ended on a sour note.

The former England captain was forced off the field in stoppage time after suffering a bloody nose while defending.

He was patched up on the sidelines as blood streamed down his face, and returned with a headband.

Rooney later took to Twitter to reveal that he sustained a broken nose requiring five stitches from the gruesome-looking challenge.

Coach Ben Olsen praised his impact since arriving from Everton: ‘I don’t think it’s the first time he’s bled in a game. He is a tough guy and I think that he will shake it off.

‘He has been fantastic in every aspect, in every way that we want him to be with this group – with his leadership and goal-scoring ability. Hopefully, it can continue to get better.’

Rooney’s first goal in MLS comes in his fourth game for DC United since sealing a move from Everton earlier this month.
