VVS Laxman frontrunner to replace Rahul Dravid as full time Head Coach of Indian cricket team

Xtra Time Web Desk: Rahul Dravid is unlikely to extend his contract as the Head Coach of the Indian cricket team, signalling the end of his two-year tenure after the conclusion of ICC Cricket World Cup in India. Dravid, who assumed the role in November 2021, guided the team to notable successes, including reaching the No. 1 spot in both Test and ODI rankings and securing victory in the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka. The team also triumphed in home Test series against Australia, Sri Lanka, and New Zealand, as well as away series in the West Indies and Bangladesh.

However, there were setbacks during Dravid’s tenure, including a loss in the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final against England and the World Test Championship Final against Australia. The team faced defeats in the South Africa Test series after initially taking a 1-0 lead and in the ODI series against South Africa. Notably, India also lost the deciding fifth Test against England in Birmingham.

Reports suggest that VVS Laxman, currently the Head Coach of a second-string Indian team for the five-match T20I series against Australia, is set to replace Dravid. Laxman, a former teammate and close friend of Dravid, has expressed his interest in the position and has engaged with the BCCI top brass. If appointed, the upcoming tour to South Africa will mark Laxman’s first stint as the full-time Head Coach.
