Virat Kohli smashes 72nd international century, goes past Ricky Ponting’s record

Xtra Time Web Desk: Virat Kohli slammed his 72nd international hundred in the third ODI against Bangladesh at Zahur Ahmed Chaudhary stadium in Chittagong on Saturday. In scoring the three-figure mark, Kohli went past former Australian captain Ricky Ponting’s record of 71 hundred. Only Sachin Tendulkar is ahead of Kohli in terms of most international hundreds. The master blaster has scored 100 international centuries.

Kohli made the most of the early reprieve and scored his 44th ODI century. He slammed 11 boundaries and two sixes on his way to the three-figure mark. Kohli last scored an ODI hundred three years back against West Indies in 2019.

Kohli also completed 1000 ODI runs in Bangladesh, becoming the second player to amass the run tally in the country after Australia’s Shane Watson.

Kohli was involved in a partnership of 290 runs for the second wicket with Ishan Kishan, who made history by becoming the seventh batsman in one-day international cricket to hit a double century and the fastest to achieve the feat.

The left-hander reached the double century in 126 balls, hitting nine sixes and 24 fours. He joins an elite club comprising Rohit Sharma, Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar, who have scored 200 runs or more in an ODI innings.
