Will Mohammed Shami regain full fitness ahead of Boxing Day test in Centurion? | SAvsIND
Xtra Time Web Desk: Team India speedster Mohammed Shami's participation in the upcoming Test series against South Africa remains uncertain due to an ankle problem. Despite being named in the squad by the BCCI Selection Committee, Shami will have to undergo a fitness evaluation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) next week. His selection will be subject to his fitness. If he passes the fitness test, which is likely going to happen soon at the National Cricket Academy, only then he will be travelling to the rainbow nation. The first test against South Africa will be played on Boxing Day at Centurion.
Shami, who performed exceptionally well in the recently concluded ICC Cricket World Cup, picking 24 wickets in 11 matches, developed the ankle issue. He recently consulted a sports orthopedic in Mumbai for diagnosis. The BCCI source indicated that Shami's selection implies a belief in his potential to recover in time for the Boxing Day Test. However, the selectors are cautious, and Shami will only travel if he attains full fitness.
While Mohammed Siraj is part of the white-ball squad for the T20Is, Shami and Jasprit Bumrah are rested from the T20I and ODI series. Both Shami and Bumrah will report to the NCA after their break and undergo fitness assessments before heading to South Africa for the crucial Test series. The selectors are keen on ensuring that Shami is 100% fit, considering the significant five-match Test series against England at home scheduled to begin in late January.
