Two time Olympic medal winning wrestler Sushil Kumar charged with attempt to murder

Xtra Time Web Desk: Delhi’s Rohini Court on Wednesday framed charges relating attempt to murder against Olympian Sushil Kumar and 17 others in the murder case of junior wrestler Sagar Dhankar.

London Olympics silver medallist Sushil Kumar was arrested for his alleged involvement in the death of junior wrestler Sagar Dhankar at Chhatrasal Stadium, along with co-accused Ajay from outer Delhi’s Mundka area.

According to police, 23-year-old Sagar was severely injured after Sushil and his friends assaulted him on May 4 at the car park of Chhatrasal Stadium. Sagar’s two friends were also allegedly assaulted. All three had to be hospitalised. Dhankar later died due to the injuries.

On May 18 last year, Sushil had approached a court in Delhi’s Rohini seeking protection from arrest, claiming that the probe against him was biased. The court dismissed his anticipatory bail plea, saying he was “prima facie the main conspirator” and allegations against him were serious in nature.

Earlier in the year in March, Delhi Police had opposed Sushil Kumar’s bail petition in Delhi High Court. In the bail plea, Sushil alleged that the police were trying to present a “false and guilty image” of him and he had no connection with any gangster.

Sushil Kumar won a bronze medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and a silver medal in the 2012 London Olympics.
