Transfer News: Mohun Bagan announces their fifth foreigner

Kolkata: Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan has announced the signing of defender Daneil Cyrus. He is currently 28 years of age and can play as a central defender & also as a right back. He is a regular player for Trinidad and Tobago national team and he has also played club football at Trinidad and Tobago, USA, Vietnam, Honduras and Saudi Arabia.

The tall defender started his youth career in 2008 with Stokely Vale. He then joined FC Santa Rosa and spent two seasons there, undergoing loan stints at Caledonia AIA and Major League Soccer club Kansas City. He then joined W Connection Football Club in TT Pro League. 2013 was a very successful year for Cyrus in club level as he won TT Pro League title, TT FA Cup as well as TT Charity Shield. In 2014 Cyrus made his first venture into Asian football and played for Hanoi T&T Club in Vietnamese V League 1. This was followed by a loan move of few months to MLS club Chicago Fire. From February, 2016 to May 2017 Cyrus yet again represented W Connection FC. He spent the next season in Honduras, playing 29 times for Juticalpa FC in Honduran top division Liga Nacional de Ascenso. Last season he sported the jersey of Al-Orobah FC in Saudi Arabia’s second division.

During his extensive club career Daneil Cyrus has also made appearances in both AFC Champions League and CONCACAF Champions League.

Cyrus is highly successful in his international career and is a regular choice for T&T national team since making his debut in 2010. He has played 83 times for the Soca Warriors and represented his country in major tournaments like the CONCACAF Gold Cup as well as Carribean Cup. Cyrus was part of the T&T squads that finished runners up in both 2012 and 2014 Carrbean Cup. In 2014 Carribean Cup Cyrus was one of the standout performers and was selected in team of the tournament. His first Gold Cup came in 2013 when he played in every match as a starter or a substitute, helping T&T reach quarter-final where they were knocked out by Mexico. He played 2 matches in 2015 Gold Cup when Soca Warriors again reached the quarter-final. In last edition of Gold Cup in 2019, Cyrus started in all three matches for his country & even captained them in the last group match – a 1-1 draw with Guyana. In 2017 he played 90 minutes in a World Cup qualifier match when T&T famously defeated USA with a 2-1 scoreline. His most recent match for T&T came last week as he helped his team carve out a 2-0 victory over UAE.
