Xtra Time Web Desk: What will South African born cricketers Grant Elliott and Devon Conway have common among them? The later on Tuesday have been granted by ICC to represent New Zealand on an exceptional circumstance. The Wellington Firebirds batsman will be eligible for New Zealand A or BlackCaps selection from August 28, the ICC has confirmed.
Grant Elliott was part of the BlackCaps squad that reached the final of the 2015 World Cup in Australia. Interesting fact is both Elliott and Conway hails from Johannesburg and represented Wellington Firebirds.
NZC and Conway will provide the ICC with written confirmation that he’ll remain in New Zealand prior to August 28, or prior to the starting date of either tour – whichever is applicable.
The BlackCaps squad is tentatively scheduled to leave for Bangladesh on August 12.
Expressing his joy, Cornway said, “Obviously very happy to hear the news. But with what’s happening throughout the world, it just puts things in perspective.Very happy, but there are bigger things to worry about at the moment.”
The 28-year-old was named New Zealand’s outstanding domestic player of the 2018-19 summer and topped run-scoring in all three formats of the game, before the current season was called off two rounds early, because of the coronavirus epidemic.
Conway totalled 1797 runs for the Wellington Firebirds during the recent season, averaging more than 60 runs per innings across Plunket Shield (four-day), Ford Trophy (one-day) and Super Smash (T20), with a top score of 307 not out in the longest form.
