Xtra Time Web Desk: Rohit Sharma has retired from T20Is after India's victory in the T20 World Cup held in the Caribbean and the USA. Consequently, the BCCI is now tasked with selecting a new full-time T20I captain. Hardik Pandya, who has previously captained India in Rohit's absence, is a strong candidate for this role.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah confirmed that Rohit Sharma will no longer be part of the T20I setup and mentioned that Hardik Pandya is indeed in consideration to take over the captaincy. However, Shah emphasized that the final decision will be made after discussions with the selectors​.

 "Captaincy will be decided by the selectors, and we will announce it after discussing with them. You asked about Hardik, there were lot of questions over his form but we and selectors showed faith in him and he proved himself,” Jay Shah said.

Shubman Gill to lead India in Zimbabwe

India will play a 5-match T20I series against Zimbabwe starting July 6 at the Harare Sports Club, with Shubman Gill leading the team. Gill, along with Rinku Singh, Avesh Khan, and Khaleel Ahmed, was part of the travelling reserves for the T20 World Cup.

After the Zimbabwe series, India will tour Sri Lanka for a 3-match T20I series later in July, although the skipper for this series has not yet been decided.

Hardik Pandya, who has captained India in 16 T20Is with 10 wins and 3 times in ODIs, is also known for leading Gujarat Titans to their maiden IPL title in 2022
