Xtra Time Web Desk: Gautam Gambhir, the former Indian opener, has formally requested the BCCI to consider South African legend Morne Morkel for the position of India's bowling coach. Morkel's name joins the list of potential candidates, which previously included Vinay Kumar and Zaheer Khan. With the BCCI having reservations about hiring overseas staff, will they heed Gambhir's recommendation?

Gautam Gambhir's interest in Morne Morkel is rooted in their longstanding professional relationship. Gambhir has faced Morkel on the field and later included him in Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) when he captained the team. Morkel, known for his impressive international career with South Africa, played for KKR from 2014 to 2016. Their professional rapport continued at Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), where Morkel served as the bowling coach under Gambhir's mentorship.

According to reports, discussions between BCCI and Morkel have already occurred. However, the board's historical reluctance to hire foreign support staff poses a significant obstacle. During the tenures of Ravi Shastri and Rahul Dravid, no overseas recruits were made, reflecting a preference for domestic talent. This precedent makes it uncertain whether the board will change its stance for Morkel, despite Gambhir's advocacy.

Convincing the BCCI is only the first hurdle. The second challenge lies in persuading Morkel to commit to an intensive travel schedule, which would keep him on the road for nearly ten months a year until 2027. Morkel currently resides in Sydney with his family, enjoying a more stable lifestyle. His willingness to relocate and adapt to the demands of the role will be crucial.

If the BCCI and Morkel reach an agreement, his addition to the coaching staff could be highly beneficial for Team India. Morkel's experience and insights, especially his recent stint as Pakistan's bowling coach, have earned him praise for nurturing talents like Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf, and Wasim Junior.

The decision to bring Morne Morkel on board as India's bowling coach hinges on overcoming significant challenges. However, his proven track record and Gambhir's strong endorsement could make a compelling case for the BCCI. The coming weeks will reveal whether the board aligns with Gambhir's vision, potentially heralding a new era in India's cricket coaching landscape.
