From helping budding cricketers to shine on the world stage to sparking controversies, the premier Indian T20 tournament has made headlines in all the above over the years.

So in this article, we will focus in on the controversial side of the cricket bonanza, which has also added to it's flavours over the years. Here are the top 5 Indian Premier League controversies :

Shah Rukh - Wankhede Controversy - 2012

Following a disagreement with security officials in 2012, Kolkata Knight Riders co-owner Shah Rukh Khan was barred from entering Wankhede Stadium, in one of the strangest and most disturbing events in IPL history. It caused quite a stir at the time.

After Mumbai Indians defeated the Kolkata Knight Riders, Shah Rukh allegedly stormed onto the field and attacked the officials and was then given a five-year suspension, which was later lifted in 2015.

Slapgate controversy - 2008

IPL offered people much to talk about in the maiden season. There was a great commotion when Mumbai Indians skipper Harbhajan Singh slapped S Sreesanth in an untoward incident between the two world cup winners.

Harbhajan was then suspended for the rest of the competition and was not even permitted to receive his salary. In a separate investigation, the BCCI punished him for five games, although Sreesanth later pardoned his 'elder brother'.

CSK and RR being banned for 2 years - 2015

In 2015, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were banned from competing in the IPL for two years due to another major IPL controversy. The suspension was imposed after it was discovered that franchise officials were implicated in corruption. Both franchises were forbidden from competing in 2016 and 2017, but they returned in 2018, with CSK winning their third title.

Mankading - 2019

Ravichandran Ashwin accomplished something unexpected in the 2019 Indian Premier League which was Mankading Jos Buttler which later became an episode of massive controversy. Previously, 'Mankading' was thought to be against the spirit of cricket. However, the MCC has revised the laws of the game, and 'Mankading' will now be classified as a 'run out.'

IPL spot fixing - 2013

In 2013, the IPL was marred by an unpleasant event that plunged the league into shame. S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila, and Ankit Chavan, three Rajasthan Royals players, were arrested by the Delhi Police amidst of the IPL for being allegedly involved in spot-fixing.

This resulted in a number of other ramifications. S Sreesanth was still fresh after playing in the 2011 World Cup team, but he was banned for life by the BCCI. The Patiala House Courts subsequently ruled all three players not guilty. Chandila and Chavan were also given life bans by the BCCI, while Sreesanth's ban was later lifted in 2020.
