[caption id="attachment_36798" align="aligncenter" width="580"]11 "Stephen Constantine is a disgrace", Sanjoy Sen backs Debjit Majumder | Iamge: XtraTime[/caption] Kolkata: The National team coach Stephen Constantine sparked controversies on Sunday when he went to watch the historic Kolkata derby at Siliguri. Debjit Majumder, the Green and Maroon goalkeeper has been undoubtedly India's best performer between the sticks and one of the instrumental characters behind the enviable success of the Mariners. But Constantine had made it very much clear that Debjit Majumder's chances of dawning the national jersey in his reign as the National team coach is literally nil. The Englishman did not have encouraging words for Mohun Bagan custodian Debjit Majumder, who had snubbed a call up to the national team in March 2016 for a 2018 World Cup qualifier against Turkmenistan. The 29 years old goalkeeper could not join with the national team squad as he had I-League commitments with Mohun Bagan and the club didn't release him on time as the two reserve goalkeepers Shilton Paul was undergoing a surgery and Arnab Das Sharma had a groin injury which was immediately informed by the club to the AIFF but it looks like National team coach Constantine has not forgotten that episode. He had this to say when he was asked about Debjit's prospects of making the Indian team for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup qualifiers, in the wake of an impressive save he pulled off to keep the scores level today. "I called him up in our squad and he failed to show up. End of story. He is not interested even though I called him into the India game," Constantine commented bluntly. Listening to the comments made by Stephen Constantine, Mohun Bagan coach retorted with a lot of anger. He said, "Constantine is a disgrace to the football of our country. Who on earth has given him the right to say such things against a player? Just because he is a foreigner, he can never say whatever he may like! The entire football fraternity should aloud their voice against this coach." The Bagan coach also criticized former Indian captain and FPAI founder Bhaichung Bhutia and the present FPAI President and former Indian International Renedy Singh. He said, "The national coach is saying all these in the presence of both Bhaichung and Renedy. They only created an organisation to protect the players from every hazard. Unfortunately, no statement from them in a situation where India's best goalkeeper is getting deprived." The statement of India's British coach has already created a huge buzz among the football fans across India and their grief is getting stronger after the "silent" stand of the parent body of Indian football. When www.xtratime.in questioned the AIFF Secretary Kusal Das, he replied, "I need to speak to the national coach. We have to check whether he stated that or not." But, at the same time he also backed the British coach by saying, "The coach takes the final call on the selections. If he doesn't feel the importance of keeping the goalkeeper in his side, we can't help it."
