Stampede due to riot in BRI Liga 1 football match in Indonesia; at least 127 killed | Watch Video

Xtra Time Web Desk: In a tragic incident, at least 127 people is reported to have lost their lives during a riot after a BRI Liga match Javanese clubs Arema and Persebaya Surabaya after the former were defeated at the match in Malang Regency, East Java. At least 180 are reported to be injured. The BRI Liga 1 has been suspended for a week.

There was a stampede as police fired tear gas to control the rioting supporters who invaded the pitch after the final whistle. Fighting reportedly started when thousands of Arema fans rushed into the field after their team lost. Supporters from Arema team invaded the pitch and police had to fire tear gas which triggered a stampede and suffocation, East Java police chief Nico Afinta told reporters.

The Indonesian football association (PSSI) said it had launched an investigation, adding that the incident had “tarnished the face of Indonesian football”.
