Sri Lankan cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka arrested for rape by Sydney Police

Xtra Time Web Desk: In a shocking incident Sri Lankan cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka has been arrested for rape by Sydney Police on Saturday. The Sri Lankan team has travelled back home, leaving Gunathilaka in Sydney. The left-handed batter was part of the Sri Lankan T20 squad for the ongoing T20 World Cup. He also played the first match against Namibia. But an injury forced him out of the T20 World Cup. He was replaced by Ashen Bandara.

Sri Lankan team management decided to keep Gunathilaka with the squad here in Australia. He had been travelling with the Sri Lankan squad during the T20 World Cup.

This is not the first time that Gunathilaka was involved in rape. In a similar incident back in 2018, he was arrested by Sri Lankan police on charges of raping a Norwegian woman in Sri Lanka. The police then dismissed Gunathilaka’s involvement, staying that the player had no personal involvement in the case in which one of his friends had been arrested.

Gunathilaka has played more than 100 international matches for Sri Lanka.
