Shubman Gill silenced critics with a brilliant hundred in Vizag

Xtra Time Web Desk: Team India middle-order batter Shubman Gill, silenced his critics with a resilient century in the second Test against England in Vizag on February 4, marking his third in Test cricket. Gill’s impressive innings of 104(142) on Day 3 rescued India from a challenging situation, boosting his confidence about his place in the side.

Despite facing challenges in transitioning from an opening role to No. 3, Gill displayed remarkable determination, surviving two close LBW calls and overcoming a shaky start to secure his second Test hundred at home. His century, achieved in 132 balls, played a crucial role in India’s lead surpassing 300 in the second session of Day 3. Although Gill maintained a muted celebration, the Indian dressing room acknowledged his incredible character under pressure.

Gill’s innings in Visakhapatnam held particular significance as it marked the first three-figure score by an Indian No. 3 batter at home since Cheteshwar Pujara’s century in November 2017. Walking in early on Day 3, Gill faced a lack of confidence evident in surviving LBW calls, but as he spent more time at the crease, his assurance grew. Notably, he formed an 81-run partnership with Shreyas Iyer, showcasing a mix of attacking strokes and cautious play.

Despite quick wickets falling around him, Gill’s composed innings, featuring excellent footwork against England’s spin attack, included 2 sixes and 11 boundaries as he reached his hundred. This innings not only solidified his place in the Test side but also underscored his ability to thrive under pressure.
