Rio 2016: Dipa Karmakar ‘excited’ not ‘nervous’ prior to her final show

Internet Desk: Large podium, heavy weight competitors, grand atmosphere- nothing can make Dipa nervous two days ahead of the final Vault event at Rio. Rather confident Dipa is in search of medal considering the fact that any of the final eight can win Medal from her event.

Dipa Karmakar reached the final of Women’s Vault, Rio 2016. Rest is history. Though she is yet to catch the page of history.

“I am excited. I am not nervous. I have reached the final of such a big podium. This is my first Olympic. So I am happy indeed. I will try to do my best in the final event”, said excited Dipa.

In fact a newcomer on the Olympic dias getting warm welcome from all of her opponents, what a better feeling one can deserve to feel proud and excited.

Dipa has become a lady of vast astonishment to the Gymnastic family in Rio. According to her, “Here everyone of the Gymnastic family keeps watching me. They use to say that the Indian Star has arrived. They feel proud for me. Not only this, they expect that if India advance in this pace within ten years India will be like China and USA”.

Dipa, who was making her first Olympic appearance, admitted that although it would be tough to compete against former medalists in the finals, she is geared up to put her best foot forward.

While expressing his confidence on Dipa, coach Bishweshwar Nandi said he is sure that the debutant Olympian would give much better performance than what she has performed so far.

“She is currently standing at the eighth place and I am expecting her to climb by two to three places. As a coach, I believe that all the eight girls, who qualified for the finals are medalists. Anything can happen on the final day. The one, whose star will favour, will clinch the medal. The preparation has been going really well. Dipa’s physio has also reached. I am confident that she will give much better performance in the finals,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dipa’s father Dulal Karmakar, who is a weightlifter himself quoted as saying, “Whether my daughter wins any medal or not it hardly matters to me. The most important part is she could qualify in the top eight . If she get any medal with God’s grace, then we will feel our hard work has been implemented which is more satisfying for me.”

He also added, “Wherever I am going, people are asking the same question of Dipa getting any medal or not. Sitting here I could feel the pressure, then just imagine what is going through her in Rio. But I have trust in her as her coach is accompanying her.”

“The credit for her success is not only on me or Dipa herself a big part of it is deserved by her mother, who has a huge contribution in her life.”
