Premier League: Manchester United settle for a 2-2 draw against Southampton, stay in fifth spot

XtraTime Web Desk: Manchester United settled for a 2-2 draw against Southampton in a Premier League clash at Old Trafford on Monday night. The Red Devils squandered a golden opportunity to break into the top four places. United is now on 59 points from 35 matches, same as Leicester. But with a better goal difference Foxes stay in the fourth spot.


It provided a perfect opportunity for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side to move into Champions League places following Chelsea and Leicester’s defeat over the weekend. It was the visitors who took an early lead through Stuart Armstrong in the 12th minute

. United equalized through Marcus Rashford in the 20th minute when he converted from a perfect pass by Anthony Martial. Martial was on target in the 23rd minute to give United the lead. It was also his 50th goal in Premier League. United were shocked when Michael Obafemi found the back of the net in the 96th minute.


Manchester United has now extended their unbeaten run to 18 matches across all competitions, matching the same feat under Sir Alex Fergusson in 2013. United have matches coming up against Crystal Palace (away), West Ham (home) and Leicester (away).
