Premier League: Brace from Mahrez, Foden gives Man City 5-0 win over Burnley

XtraTime Web Desk: Double strikes from Riyad Mahrez and Phil Foden helped Manchester City complete a 5-0 demolition over Burnley during Monday night’s Premier League clash at the Etihad stadium. David Silva scored the other goal for City. The win puts Pep Guardiola’s side on 63 points, nine ahead of Leicester in third.


City took the lead through Phil Foden during the 22nd minute of the match. Riyad Mahrez scored in the 43rd minute to give City a 2-0 lead. It was a clinical finish who has now scored against Burnley in last Premier League encounters. The Algerian was again on the score sheet as he converted a spot kick in the injury time of first half. City got a penalty after Aguero was brought down inside the box by Ben Mee. VAR showed the Argentine was wrongly fouled. City went in the half time with a 3-0 lead.


City extended the lead in the 51st minute through David Silva to make it 4-0. Foden played a perfect cross for David Silva to fire home from close range. Foden scored his second goal of the match after he took advantage of Gabriel Jesus’s scuffed shot to slot past goalkeeper Nick Pope for goal number five.


A controversial incident took during the match as a plane flew over the Etihad as Manchester City with the message “White Lives Matter Burnley”. The incident took place shortly after the kick off of the Premier League encounter.


“Burnley strongly condemned the actions of those responsible for the aircraft and offensive banner that flew over the Etihad on Monday evening.
