Bengal Chess Association Begins Preparations for Chess Olympiad Initiative
The Bengal Chess Association (BCA) has officially announced the launch of preparations for the CFC Chess Olympiad (Chess for Change), which will be organized in Bengal for the first time.
Kolkata: The Bengal Chess Association (BCA) has officially announced the launch of preparations for the CFC Chess Olympiad (Chess for Change), which will be organized in Bengal for the first time.
The announcement was made by FIDE Trainer and Bengal Chess Association President Atanu Lahiri during a one-day Rapid Chess Tournament held to celebrate International Chess Day.
The tournament, jointly organized by the Bengal Chess Association and the BJP Sports Cell, West Bengal, took place at Khudiram Anushilan Kendra and witnessed participation from nearly 400 young chess players representing 15 districts across the state.
The inaugural ceremony was attended by West Bengal Industries Minister Tapas Roy, Labour Minister Bhaskar Bhattacharya, 2018 Asian Games Bridge gold medallist Pranab Bardhan, and BJP Sports Cell chief Dipankar Modak.
Speaking at the event, Labour Minister Bhaskar Bhattacharya said that the West Bengal Government intends to work jointly with the Bengal Chess Association to improve the standard of chess and nurture talented players across the state in the coming years.
Trophies and cash prizes were awarded to the winners in the Under-7, Under-9, Under-11, Under-13, and Under-15 categories for both boys and girls.
The organisers also revealed that the inaugural CFC Chess Olympiad (Chess for Change) is scheduled to be held in November this year. The initiative aims to promote chess among children from underprivileged sections of society, with the first phase of the Olympiad focusing exclusively on participants from the Eastern states of India.
