XtraTime Webdesk: At just 19 years old, Indian cyclist Harshita Jakhar has achieved a landmark moment by becoming the first Indian woman to feature at the prestigious Tour de France Femmes. Her historic appearance marks a significant milestone for Indian cycling and could inspire a new generation of young women to take up the sport.
Harshita’s journey began in an unexpected setting. Hailing from Rajasthan, she started cycling seriously on the streets of Patiala during the 2020 lockdown. Her father and coach, former international cyclist Rakesh Jakhar, quickly noticed something special in his daughter. Harshita could ride between 30 and 40 kilometres without showing signs of fatigue, revealing an exceptional level of natural endurance.
Her potential soon translated into results. Training at the Sports Authority of India Centre of Excellence in Patiala, Harshita rapidly established herself among India’s leading junior cyclists. Her performances on the national stage showed that she had the talent and determination to compete at a much higher level.
At the Khelo India Youth Games, Harshita produced a stunning performance by winning three gold medals. She topped the 500-metre time trial, 7.5-kilometre scratch race and 2-kilometre individual pursuit, completing a remarkable golden hat-trick.
Her success was not limited to domestic competitions. At the 2024 Asian Junior Championships, Harshita continued to demonstrate her ability against some of Asia’s best young cyclists. She secured one silver medal and two bronze medals, further establishing herself as one of India’s most promising cycling talents.
Now, her appearance at the Tour de France Femmes represents another giant leap forward. Competing at one of the biggest stages in women’s cycling will provide invaluable experience and exposure.
