The 33-year-old India debutant has finally got his maiden Test wicket and what a time to do it. With Sri Lanka trying to frustrate India after a long lower-order resistance, Jain provided the breakthrough, dismissing Lahiru Kumara to open his Test wicket account.
And he wasn’t done there.
In the very next over, Jain struck again, removing the dangerous Sonal Dinusha, who had just completed his second century of the series. That wicket wrapped up Sri Lanka’s first innings at 290.
Jain, who has spent years grinding in domestic red-ball cricket, has always been a player who embraced the longer format. His journey to Test cricket was built through years of first-class cricket, patience and consistency.
And now, on his Test debut, that love for red-ball cricket is beginning to show.
Born in Indore, the Madhya Pradesh all-rounder made his Ranji Trophy debut back in 2014. But the road to India was anything but easy. For more than a decade, Saransh kept grinding through domestic cricket, from local club matches to practicing on rooftop nets, waiting patiently for his opportunity.
Cricket was always close to home. His father, Subodh Jain, a former first-class cricketer, was the one who trained him and helped build his dream of playing for India.
Then, at just 21, after returning from a club tour in Australia, Saransh received devastating news, his father had been diagnosed with mouth cancer. Through those difficult years, the dream of seeing his son play for India became a powerful motivation for Subodh.And after more than a decade of waiting, Saransh finally received his India Test cap at 33.
Now, every wicket he takes carries a little bit of that long journey with it.
For Saransh Jain, this Test debut was also a chance that came his way almost unexpectedly.
In July, he was named as the off-spin cover in India’s Test squad for the Sri Lanka tour after Washington Sundar was sidelined by injury. Then, just before the second Test in Colombo, Kuldeep Yadav was ruled out with an infection, opening the door for Jain to finally make his India debut.
On August 23, 2026, at the age of 33, Saransh Jain received his Test cap from Ravindra Jadeja.And this opportunity made Saransh’s debut even more special. At the age of 33 he became India’s oldest Test debutant since Robin Singh in 1998. After waiting for more than a decade in domestic cricket, Saransh finally got his chance and he walked into the Indian Test side as a player who had truly taken the long road to the top.
Sometimes, cricket is about waiting for years, and then being ready when that one opportunity finally arrives. For Saransh, that opportunity has arrived now.
So, from waiting more than a decade for his India chance to taking his first two Test wickets in the same innings. Saransh Jain is certainly making his debut count.
