Maharashtra Government takes back land allotted to Sunil Gavaskar for cricket academy after 33 years: Report

Xtra Time Web Desk: Maharashtra Government has taken back a land from Sunil Gavaskar which was allotted to the Little Master for his academy. The plot of land was unutilised for 33 years.

It is worth noting that not only Gavaskar but Sachin Tendulkar was also involved in the project. According to a report in TOI both Sachin and Gavaskar met the Chief Minister of the State

Gavaskar recently decided to give up on the land. In an interview to TOI, Gavaskar was quoted, “Yes, the trust had returned the land to the government. My current work commitments and social welfare requirements are such that I wouldn’t be able to do justice to setting up the academy which was a dream of mine.”

The plot of land was handed over to Mr Gavaskar 33 years back during the late 1980s as the legendary cricketer wanted to set up an indoor cricket academy. However, after waiting for a long now, Mhada had sent a proposal to take back the land allotted to Gavaskar in 2019

A fresh appeal was made from housing minister Jitendra Awhad and Gavaskar had no option but to return the land

“Yes, the trust had returned the land to the government. My current work commitments and social welfare requirements are such that I wouldn’t be able to do justice to setting up the academy which was a dream of mine. Yes, of course, if Mhada wants to go ahead with the development on their own and require any inputs from me I would be happy to do so,” Gavaskar told TOI on behalf of SGCFT.
