Legendary cricket commentator and journalist Kishore Bhimani passes away

Xtra Time Web Desk: Famed cricket commentator and journalist Kishore Bhimani passed away on Thursday morning. He was 80 years old. It has been reported that he died owing to complications that arose after being admitted in hospital last month due to the coronavirus. He is survived by his wife Rita and son Gautam. The loss of Kishore Bhimani leaves a big void in the cricketing fraternity in particular.

The late Kishore Bhimani was considered an encyclopaedia of the game. Kishore da as he is fondly known by his closed ones is best remembered for being on air during the tied Test of 1986 between India and Australia in Chepauk. In his over three decade long cricket commentary and journalism stint, Bhimani was conferred with many awards. In the 2012 H&G Clinic Journalism awards, Bhimani was conferred with the prestigious Lifetime achievement award for his contributions to journalism and cricket commentary. He has also written a book named ‘The Accidental Goodman’.  

He was very close to former cricketers Sunil Gavaskar, Sir Gary Sobers, Imran Khan, Sir Viv Richards, Ravi Shastri and many more. The current Team India Head Coach, in an interview with Times of India, had shared an interesting anecdote over Kishore Bhimani. “I remember how spot-on his comments were. He had once slammed me for a wrong shot on crease during a test in Eden Gardens and the same evening we shared drinks at his residence. And our ties remain so till this date.’

The passing away of Kishore Bhimani will leave a void in the world of cricket commentary and sports journalism. Tributes and condolence messages started pouring in from all quarters.
