Xtra Time Web Desk: India captain Rohit Sharma has put an end to speculation surrounding his future in ODI cricket with a definitive statement after India's triumph in the Champions Trophy 2025. Addressing the media post-final, Rohit assured fans that he has no plans to step away from the format anytime soon.  

"I am not going to retire from this format. Just to make sure no rumours are spread moving forward," Rohit stated. "Koi future plan hai nahi, jo chal raha hai chalega (There is no future plan, whatever is going on will continue as it is)." His remark quickly went viral, bringing relief to Indian cricket fans.  

Long-Term Plans Unclear, but Focus on Fitness and Performance  

A day later, Rohit provided further clarity on his career plans in an interview with Jio Hotstar. "Right now, I am taking things as they come. It wouldn't be fair for me to think too far ahead. At this moment, my focus is on playing well and maintaining the right mindset. I don't want to draw any lines and say whether I will or won’t play in the 2027 World Cup," he explained. "There's no point in making such statements right now. Realistically, I have always taken my career one step at a time."  

However, a Cricbuzz report suggests that Rohit may already have plans in place to extend his career until the 2027 ODI World Cup, set to be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. If everything goes as planned, the Indian skipper might retire from international cricket after the tournament.

Collaboration with Abhishek Nayar for Extended Career  

With Rohit set to turn 38 in two months and 40 by the time of the 2027 World Cup, fitness and form will be crucial in his journey. The Cricbuzz report states that Rohit will collaborate with Abhishek Nayar, India's assistant coach, to focus on fitness, batting, and overall approach. Nayar, a former teammate of Rohit, is a respected figure among Indian cricketers, having played a key role in the careers of players like Dinesh Karthik and KL Rahul.  

Between now and the 2027 World Cup, India are expected to play 27 ODIs, with more matches likely to be scheduled later. Rohit aims to use these games as preparation for the marquee event.

Uncertain Test Future, IPL 2025 Crucial for Selection  

While Rohit has confirmed his commitment to ODIs, his Test future remains uncertain. His performance in the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy was underwhelming, and selection for India's tour of England in June is not guaranteed. A source quoted in the report stated, "Let the IPL be over first. Only an astrologer thinks so far ahead into the future," indicating that his form in IPL 2025 will play a significant role in determining his Test future.  

For now, Rohit Sharma remains focused on the immediate challenges ahead, keeping his options open for the long run while maintaining his trademark no-nonsense approach to career planning.
