Xtra Time Web Desk: Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has expressed concerns over Virat Kohli's recent form ahead of the much-anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Speaking on the ICC Review podcast, Ponting highlighted Kohli’s prolonged struggle, pointing out that the Indian star has managed just two Test centuries in the last five years. He emphasized that such a record would typically be unacceptable for any other top-order batter in international cricket.

Ponting’s remarks come in the wake of India's recent Test series whitewash against New Zealand, where Kohli’s performance was disappointing. Scoring only 93 runs in the entire series, the Indian batter struggled against New Zealand’s spinners like Mitchell Santner and Ajaz Patel, getting out in uncharacteristic ways. This poor run of form has put additional pressure on Kohli as India prepares for the crucial series against Australia.

Despite his concerns, Ponting remains optimistic about Kohli’s chances of a resurgence in the upcoming tour of Australia. He praised Kohli's impressive track record against Australia, emphasizing his potential to bounce back. Ponting said, "You don't ever question the greats of the game. There's no doubt, he's a great of the game. If there's a time for him to turn it around, it'd be this series."

With India needing to win at least four matches to secure a direct qualification spot for the World Test Championship final, Kohli's form will be under the spotlight. Ponting believes that the first Test could be a turning point, hinting at Kohli’s history of strong performances on Australian soil, and said, "I wouldn’t be surprised to see Virat make runs in the first game."

This series will be crucial not only for India’s chances but also for Kohli's attempt to silence his critics.
