Malik, a Rio 2016 medallist, praised Phogat for her determination and resilience. In her social media post, Malik expressed that Phogat’s retirement marks not just a personal loss but a defeat for the entire nation.

Phogat announced her decision to retire on Thursday, a day after being disqualified from the 50kg freestyle wrestling final at the 2024 Paris Olympics for exceeding the weight limit by 100 grams.

The disqualification came just before the final, where Phogat was a strong contender for gold.

In her retirement post, Phogat expressed her heartbreak, saying, "Ma Kusti (Wrestling) won against me, I lost. Forgive me, your dream and my courage has been broken. I don't have any more strength now. Goodbye Wrestling 2001-2024."
