Xtra Time Web Desk: India’s Nishad Kumar secured a silver medal in the men’s high jump T47 event at the Paris Paralympics, adding to his silver from the Tokyo Paralympics three years ago. The 24-year-old athlete delivered a season-best jump of 2.04m, finishing behind USA’s Roderick Townsend, who clinched the gold with a 2.12m jump.

Nishad showcased a remarkable performance, dominating the 11-man field in the event. Although he couldn’t surpass the 2.08m mark in his final attempt, leading to some disappointment, Townsend’s gesture of embracing Nishad brought a smile to both athletes, reflecting the spirit of sportsmanship.

Nishad’s journey to the podium is one of resilience. At the tender age of six, he lost his right hand in a severe accident involving a grass-cutting machine on his family farm. Despite this life-changing event, Nishad found strength in sports, motivated by his mother, a former state-level volleyball player and discus thrower. He took up para-athletics in 2009, gradually rising to become a prominent figure in the sport.
