Paddy Upton, The unsung architect behind Gukesh’s World Chess Championship triumph
Xtra Time Web Desk: From scripting India’s historic cricket World Cup win in 2011 to mentoring the hockey team to an Olympic bronze in Tokyo, Paddy Upton has now extended his legacy to chess by shaping the mental resilience of teenage Grandmaster D Gukesh, who clinched the 2024 World Chess Championship title.
Although a novice in chess, Upton’s expertise in mental conditioning played a pivotal role in Gukesh’s victory. Their collaboration began in mid-2024, courtesy of the WestBridge-Anand Chess Academy (WACA), which sought a mental conditioning expert to prepare Gukesh for the ultimate challenge.

Gukesh faced immense pressure, particularly with opponents like Ding Liren returning to form. Yet, under Upton’s guidance, he maintained his composure in critical moments, including the decisive Game 14, where Ding’s error and Gukesh’s focus sealed the championship.
