Xtra Time Web Desk: Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami, who has been out of action since the 2023 ODI World Cup due to a right heel injury, has made a significant stride toward his return by resuming bowling in the nets. Shami's injury required surgery on his Achilles tendon earlier this year, sidelining him for the home series against Australia, the IPL 2024, and the ICC T20 World Cup. Under the careful supervision of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Shami has been working diligently on his recovery.

In a recent Instagram post, Shami shared a video of himself cautiously bowling in the training nets. Although he has not yet reached full bowling intensity, the 33-year-old is focused on regaining his form and securing medical clearance from the National Cricket Academy . His post was captioned, “Vibing with the latest, grinding for the greatest. #shami #mdshami #mdshami11 #hardwork #practice.” With the trending song Tauba Tauba. Before him Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh and Suresh Raina also made a video on this song celebrating their world championship of Legends 2024 win.

Shami was a standout performer for India in the 2023 ODI World Cup, taking 24 wickets in seven matches at an average of 10.70. Despite his injury, he played a crucial role in India's success in the tournament hosted by India. However, stiffness in his ankle before the England series in January prevented him from making a timely recovery.

Shami's continued ankle pain led to his withdrawal from the South Africa series, paving the way for debuts by pacers Mukesh Kumar and Akash Deep in the 2024 Test season. Despite his absence, Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh stepped up, collectively taking 32 wickets in the T20 World Cup 2024, helping India secure the trophy by defeating South Africa in the final. Hardik Pandya also contributed significantly with the ball.

India is scheduled to tour Sri Lanka later this month for a series of three T20Is and three ODIs. Shami is unlikely to be included in either squad as he continues to regain his bowling pace and awaits medical clearance from the NCA. The BCCI is expected to announce the squads for the Sri Lanka tour on Wednesday, July 17.
