Massive blow for India ahead of Champions Trophy! Here’s the latest injury update on Bumrah!
Xtra Time Web Desk: India’s pace ace Jasprit Bumrah is set to be rested for most of the upcoming home white-ball series against England due to back spasms sustained during the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The decision is seen as a precautionary measure with an eye on the ICC Champions Trophy, beginning February 19 in Dubai.
Bumrah, who emerged as India’s standout performer with 32 wickets in the 1-3 series loss to Australia, bowled over 150 overs during the four-match Test series. His injury, which prevented him from bowling in the final innings of the last Test, has been attributed to the heavy workload. The BCCI medical team is prioritizing his recovery to ensure his availability for the Champions Trophy, where his role is considered crucial to India’s campaign.

The severity of Bumrah’s back spasms is yet to be determined, with recovery timelines varying based on the grade of the injury. A Grade 1 spasm may require two to three weeks of rehabilitation, while Grade 2 injuries could take up to six weeks. In the worst-case scenario of a Grade 3 injury, Bumrah may need three months of rest and rehabilitation.
Sources suggest that Bumrah was already expected to miss the T20I series against England, given it is not a World Cup year. However, he was likely to feature in at least two of the three ODIs to maintain match fitness for the Champions Trophy. His participation in the England series, including a potential homecoming game in Ahmedabad on February 12, will now depend on the injury assessment and his recovery progress.

India will host England for five T20Is and three ODIs starting January 22, but the team’s focus remains firmly on preparing a fit and firing squad for the ICC Champions Trophy.
